THE COMING OF THE SPIRIT

The coming of the Spirit has been well prophesied in the OT Scriptures. Examples of such prophesies include those of Isaiah (32:15; 44:1-5), Ezekiel (36:27) and Joel (2:28-29), and is the great promise of the Lord. It is clear that various terms have been used to denote the coming of the Spirit. However, they were not designed to be distinguishable from one another. In their minds, despite the variety of illustrations used to describe it, the writers of the Bible knew there is only one Spirit.

Various terms used

It is imperative to establish that the various terms used in the NT Scriptures refer to one and the same thing – the coming of the Spirit. The imminent coming of the Spirit is well documented in the Gospel of John. Jesus openly states that after He is glorified, the Spirit will be given to those who believe (Jn. 7:39b). On God’s part, it is He who gives the Holy Spirit. The word “give” denotes that God is the Giver (cf. Jn. 3:34) and the authority of giving lies with Him.
