THE COMING OF THE SPIRIT

Is this a harmless or fatal difference?

Some believe that saying a baptised person has the Spirit dwelling in him there and then, is not harmful, and a small insignificant “variation”. The reason is that speaking in tongues to show you have received the Spirit is something extra. By this, they mean the Spirit is in a baptised believer (the former), but being baptised by the Holy Spirit later on, with speaking in tongues is just proof (the latter). Let us look at this very carefully:

  • Nowhere in the Bible is this idea mentioned or substantiated.
  • It would be an awful lie to say that the Spirit is in a person when He is not. If the Spirit is assumed to be in a person at the point of baptism, will there be a need to pray for the Spirit? The need to pray for the Spirit would, in time, disappear.
  • If receiving the Spirit, with tongue-speaking as evidence, is not emphasised anymore, this will lead to the eventual decline of being edified by speaking in tongues.
  • Most subtly, this belief would open up a floodgate of changing basic beliefs that have been upheld since the beginning of the church.
  • This is a fatal difference, and to wrap it up with teachings that seemingly support the doctrine, creates confusion and a gross misunderstanding.
